Surgical Services

Orthopaedic surgery at Sports Medicine Associates is performed by Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeons who are fellowship trained in Sports Medicine.

Orthopaedic surgery corrects problems affecting the skeleton and its attachments, the ligaments and tendons. It may also deal with problems of the nervous system.

Choosing an orthopaedist is an important step in obtaining appropriate treatment. Patients looking for a qualified orthopaedist should inquire if they are "Board Certified" by their accrediting organization. We are proud of the fact all our physicians and surgeons are Board Certified in their specialties and have completed one full year fellowships in Sports Medicine at a fully accredited Sports Medicine Program. This specialized training allows us to be proficient in treating sports-related orthopaedic conditions while enhancing our ability to treat other general orthopaedic concerns as well.

The range of treatments done by our orthopaedists is enormous and includes carpal tunnel, joint replacements, broken bones, strains and sprains, and dislocations.

Our surgical procedures are performed at local hospitals or trauma centers or at a free-standing surgical center where we work closely with a surgical team including an anesthesiologist and surgical nurse. Orthopaedic surgery can be performed under general, regional or local anesthesia.

Great improvements have been made in the development of artificial limbs and joints, and in the materials available to repair damage to bones and connective tissue. As developments occur in the fields of metal alloy and plastics, changes take place in orthopaedic surgery that allow our surgeons to more nearly duplicate the natural functions of the bones, joints and ligaments, and to more accurately restore damaged parts to their original range of motion.

Prior to any surgery, our patients undergo extensive testing to determine the proper corrective procedure. Tests may include x rays, computed tomography scans (CT scans), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), myelograms, diagnostic arthroplasty, and blood tests. Conservative treatment will often be tried before surgery is prescribed.

After surgery, our physicians work closely with our highly-trained physical therapists to assure that our patients receive treatment that will enhance the range of motion, strength and return function to the affected part.

Thousands of people have successful orthopaedic surgery each year to recover from injuries or restore lost function. The degree of success in individual recoveries depends on the age and general health of the patient, the medical problem being treated, and the patient's willingness to comply with rehabilitative therapy after the surgery.
