Sports Medicine
Sports related injuries require specialized care to promote optimum healing. Whether you are are a weekend jogger or tennis player, a professional hockey player or marathon runner, a golfer or a minor league baseball player, a child or senior citizen, or even a musician or actress, trauma to the muscles and joints can limit or prevent your participation in these activities.
To provide proper diagnosis and prevent future injuries for athletes of all ages and skill levels in the Central Savannah River Area of Georgia and South Carolina, we created Sports Medicine Associates (SMA).
SMA offers diagnosis and treatment of all athletic injuries plus pre-sports participation exams. Inpatient treatment and surgical procedures are done at area hospitals and surgical centers. Arthroscopy, a microsurgical technique, is often employed to repair joints while traditional reconstructive surgery is used for musculoskeletal damage.
Other treatments include custom-made orthotics, braces, sports splints and personalized home rehabilitation programs. Staff members also consult with high school and university coaches and offer second opinions. Information focusing on prevention and the latest treatment methods is made available for coaches, trainers and physicians.
Our team of specialists delivers individualized care programs designed specifically for your injuries and training needs, whether you are part of a competitive team or if you work out as part of a healthy lifestyle.
This team includes:
-
sports medicine physicians
-
orthopaedic surgeons
-
physical therapists
-
certified athletic trainers
-
massage therapy
SMA specialists are familiar with injuries, specific to each sport, affecting your cartilage, meniscus and ligaments. They know when an injury can be exercised, splinted and protected to keep you in a game or season. If that’s not possible, they’ll know of the most effective treatments and rehabilitation programs to help you recover fully if not improve your performance level before you return to the game.
SMA operates by appointment only. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. All athletic emergencies will be handled within the same day. At all other times emergency cases may be seen in the Emergency Room at Doctors Hospital. Patients should ask for the Sports Medicine Associates physician on call.
To schedule an appointment please call 706-210-7529.
