Blood Transfusions

Most patients lose blood during surgery, the amount depending upon the length and complexity of the surgery. Some of the blood you lose may be collected in the operating room through a cell saver system and given back to you through your intravenous (IV) line during the surgery. However, many patients will need additional blood transfusions during or after the surgery.

Types of blood donations

Autologous donations - you donate your own blood

Your surgeon may suggest that you donate blood before the operation for yourself (called autologous blood). This blood can be given back to you if needed through your IV line. Your surgical coordinator can help to arrange autologous blood donation. Also, some local Red Cross Chapters and hospitals offer this service and will send your blood to your hospital before your surgery. There is a fee for this service, which is often not covered by your insurance.

Your surgeon will prescribe iron pills if you give blood before your surgery, to replace this important element, which makes up part of the blood. If you are younger than 10 years old, weigh less than 80 pounds, take certain medications of have other health problems, you may not qualify for autologous donations.

Directed donations - someone else donates blood for you

Friends or relatives may donate their blood for use during your surgery. If their blood matches yours, and meets special standards, it can be used for you. This type of donation is called a directed donation and must be arranged ahead of time and donated 2-21 days before the date of surgery. Appointments must be made in the Blood Donor Center for directed donations.

Blood Bank

Properly matched blood is also available from the Blood Bank, and has proven to be as safe as designated donations.
